On April 27th the Rafael del Pino Foundation hosted the official reception to the 2010 Rafael del Pino scholars. The President of the Foundation, members of the Executive and Supervisory Boards and representatives of the Alumni Association took part in the event.

Diana Gonzalez Blanco launched Top MBA Mom, on-line community for MBA Women

Diana Gonzalez Blanco (Scholar 2006. MBA 2008 – NYU Leonard N. Stern School of Business), has launched her business venture October 1st, 2009.

Top MBA Mom is an exclusive, membership based, social and professional online community for MBA women (candidate, student or graduate), who are also mothers or might become one. The main goal of this community is to open lines of communication for these women, allowing them to share their experiences, seize business opportunities, find mentors, participate in exclusive events, socialize, discuss current topics and/or simply build an invaluable network.

Last week took place the final interviews for the selection of scholars 2009. Finally, there were 11 who were chosen and who will commence their scholarship on years 2009/2010 or 2010/2011.

Climent Quintana-Domeque joins the faculty of Universidad de Alicante

After graduating from the University of Princeton in June of 2008, Climent Quintana-Domeque (scholar 2002) joined in October the faculty of the Universidad de Alicante as Visiting Professor in the Departamento de Fundamentos del Análisis Económico. On this same year, he started collaborating with the Fundación de Estudios de Economía Aplicada as Affiliated Researcher.

Iñaki Berenguer wins the entrepeneurs competition MIT 100K Mobile Track with a prize of $ 25,000 dólares

Ubitrack, the company of Iñaki Berenguer (scholar 2007), has been finalist of the business plans competition of the Massachusetts Insitute of Technology (MIT 100K Business Plan Competition), having previously won the 100K Mobile Track (price of $ 25,000). This year 232 business plans participated in the competition. Previously, his company had won in February the 100K Executive Summary competition ($1,000) where more than 150 had participated. This year 232 companies entered into the said competition. An initial pre-selection of 35 companies was made in April and the final ceremony took place last 14 May.

The jury was formed by 40 judges, most of them private equity funds’ partners (Atlas Venture, Trilogy Partners, Northbridge Ventures, Polaris Ventures, General Catalyst Partners, Castile Ventures, New Enterprise Associates) and renown entrepeneurs such as Bob Metcalfe, inventor of Ethernet and founder of 3Com, or Howard Anderson (founder of The Yankee Group). These judges evaluated the business plan and a 30 minute presentation of each of the 7 finalists that was made in private before all judges due to confidentiality issues.
The MIT 100K is the pioneer and probably most prestigious business plan competition in the World. It has helped to create more than 85 companies with a stock exchange value of more than 10 billion dollars. Among them, Harmonix (creators of the games “Guitar Hero” or “Rock Band”), Akamai (manages 20% of the worldwide Internet traffic), Brontes, Mazu Networks, Direct Hit-Ask Jeeves, or Terrafugia. Along the competition personalized time with lawyers, private equity funds partners or strategic consulting firms is offered to support the development of the business plan and to set up initial contacts with potential investors or partners.
Ubitrack, provides P2P location systems to solve low precision and coverage problems of the current GPS systems. The idea is patented and it has been developed in the MIT laboratories during the last 3 years by the rest of the team. The $25,000 prize will be used to continue developing the model.

Javier Oliván, in charge of internationalizing Facebook.

Javier Oliván (granted 2004) is Facebook’s international product and marketing responsible. His main objective is to spread Facebook worldwide. The first step has been to create a translation tool that allows users to translate Facebook into their languages and dialects. According to Javier, “the objective is to support the maximum number of languages in the minimum possible time”.

The international strategy aims to promote the platform that Facebook offers for developers and also promote advertising products for business. For example the “business pages” allow to createfirm profiles free of charge within Facebook.

Arnau Gutiérrez (2001 fellow) and Paqui Santonja publish their article “Descentraliced euro-mediterranean cooperation: an approximation to the cooperation for the development of Mediterranean local governments” in the last issue of the Spanish Review of Development and Cooperation.

The article shows the main features of the development cooperation by local euromediterranean governments, highlighting their specificity and value added in a region characterized by political instabilities and socio-economic inequality.
